Early Antique Paint Decorated

Slant Lid - Tin Canister

Pennsylvania Dutch (German)

Lancaster County, Circa 1880

Tole Decorated

'Tulips & Whirling Star'

A rare find, an early slant-lid canister made of tin coated sheet iron and hand decorated with Tulips & Whirling Star.  From a Lancaster County, PA. estate, this is at least from circa 1880 or possibly earlier.  A true item of early Tinware made by a Pennsylvania craftsman and decorated in the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition.

The construction of the body is formed of pieces of tin that are folded, lapped and joined with wire re-enforcing the rolled over edges of the tin and soldered.  The lid was attached by means of two small piece of tin folded and soldered to both the lid and the top surface of the canister.  The lid fits very well, but due to age and wear to the tiny curled tab at the edge of the lid it no longer snaps shut tightly.

A charming little canister, perhaps once used for sugar or tea.  The paint is all original and the decoration was done by hand.

We have left this just as we found it.  It has not been cleaned.  Shows expected wear with some light rust to the base and interior.  No dents or breaks to the metal.

Size:  6-3/4" high - 6-7/8" across -  7" front to back
