Framed in Gilt Frame Under
A handsome 19th century needlepoint
of a boy and his dog fishing, a lovely scene along a river with trees in
the background. It is English in origin. The work was done in
needlepoint and petitepoint in wool and silk. A charming scene with
a spaniel dog and his young master. The boy having just caught a fish
he holds it up proudly while standing on the bank of a river with his fishing
pole in his other hand and his fishing creel on the ground next to his dog.
The boy is dressed in typical early Victorian clothing, a dress with
bloomers. The needlepoint and petit point is done in both wool and
silk and remains in excellent condition with no damage.
We purchased this handsome antique
needlepoint from a local estate here in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
This was originally framed underglass and the dust cover was still
in place along with the original 19th century label of the framer in England.
The frame however was in poor condition, and the glass was cracked.
The giltwood liner was still in very good condition so we made use
of it and replaced the frame with a similar beautiful period antique giltwood
frame and added new glass. The needlepoint remains on it's original
wide flat wood stretcher. The original framers label is attached to
the paper dust cover on the reverse. Especially charming is the last
line on the label, "Ladies and Gentlemen waited upon at their Private
Residences". An antique dealers label where this was original purchased
is also attached to the dust cover on the
