A Sgraffito Decorated Bottle

Pennsylvania Redware Pottery

Lester Breininger of Robesonia, Pennsylvania - 2007

"Sunflower & Tulip"

A simply charming bottle or flask in a rare shape.  We purchased this personally from Lester at his Porch Sale in 2007.  Sgraffito design incised through a dense black slip coating to reveal the handsome redware beneath, additional applied decoration in rich brown, white and grass green enhancing the flowers.  The bottle is signed on the base 'Breininger Pottery, Robesonia, PA. July 10,2007 Very Hot'

Size:  7-3/4" high - 15" in circumference and 3" across the base.

About the artist:

Lester Breininger was a nationally known figure whose fame spread far beyond the little town of Robesonia where his home and studio were located for many years. Breininger had been producing pottery since 1965. His work can be found in the collections of several major museums, among then, the Smithsonian, Winterthur, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.  Many national magazines have written articles about him.

Each year, Lester had an open house at his combined home and studio which he called his annual 'porch sale' they were held every August. The first sale was held back in 1970 on the 100 foot long porch of his historic Victorian home. We were fortunate to attend many of those sales since we live just a few miles away. We made many purchases at the Porch Sales over the years, and it was always amazing to see the crowds that gathered there, with folks traveling from many states to buy his latest works.
