An Antique Country
Lancaster County Folk Art Paint
HAND CARVED HEART
Found locally in Lancaster County
Pennsylvania an antique wooden apple tray from the late 1800's. This
has a delightful old Primitive decoration of a flowers painted all along
the interior sides of the tray. It's a charming design and while the
paint decoration shows wear it's still in very good condition. The tray
is from circa 1880 and is made entirely of wood. The painted decoration
is later, probably 1920's or so, you can see the old wear to the wood surface
through the paint on the flat inner area and along the
Beautiful HEART shaped HANDLES
The handles are raised and have carved
heart cutouts. Quite primitive, each heart was carved by hand and is
just slightly different from the other. All hand painted decoration
of charming naive flowers and vines on a barn red background. The hearts
and all along the inner edge there is outline decoration in deep gold coloring.
The top edge is painted black. The center of the tray is dark
green. The exterior is the same barn red as on the interior sides, and there
is a squiggle line decoration around the back. The corners are canted,
the construction is nailed.
The tray shows plenty of early wear
both on the interior and exterior and there is wear to the painted surface,
but still in excellent condition. Some small shrinkage lines to the
wood around the heart carvings. The tray rests flat, no warping, it
is good and strong.
