Antique 19th Century

- Penny Rug Table Mat -

Lancaster County

From a local estate here in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, a fine example of an antique 19th century Penny Rug Table Mat.

Made entirely of layered felted wool with exquisite and precise hand stitching. The choice of felted wool colors and the manner in which the Pennies were created and stitched sets this antique Penny Rug apart. The maker had an exceptional eye for design.

It is truly a fine example of antique Pennsylvania AMISH FOLK ART

All of the 37 Pennies were built up in 3 sections, the back layer 2-1/2" across, the second layer 1-3/4" and the top layer 1" across. Each one was beautifully hand stitched starting with the thick felted wool black felt rounds that were each hand sewn from the back to the front all the way around the edge with neat even straight stitches. The middle and top layers have hand stitching in either matching or corresponding colors of thread to the felted wool that was used. Close up they each look like tiny cushions, just beautifully made. Exceptional handwork !

Size: 18" x 15"

This has been well cared for,  it's in very good condition.

There is a little wear along the edges of some of the pennies, no spots or stains or odors.
