An Early Treenware Kitchen Tool

Antique Mortar & Pestle

Lancaster County Pennsylvania Antique

From a local collection of antique Primitive Kitchen Tools here in Lancaster County Pennsylvania, a handsome early Mortar & Pestle circa 1820's. Very heavy this weighs nearly 5-lbs.  The mortar is 6" across the top, 7-1/2" high, and the interior measures 4-1/2" deep, making the base a full 3" thick.

The wood on the mortar looks like a lignum vitae, or walnut, it is extremely heavy and weighs nearly 4-lbs. Beautiful figuring with a rich color.  It has been very well cared.  It was turned on a lathe and has incised and reeded lines.  The pestle is also quite heavy, probably made of walnut and shows a great amount of wear.  No breaks or repairs, shows good age shrinkage lines on the base of both pieces.  Nice natural patina to the wood with no stain or wax, a beauty!

Size:  Mortar is 7-1/2" high x 6" across  -  Pestle is 11" long

Well worn ... A Primitive Beauty!

Still good and strong and sturdy.

This has seen a great deal of use and shows good wear.
