About the Fraktur

This fraktur is 140 years old.  It is framed under glass. The fraktur has had some very minor damage at the very top center but overall, is considered in very good condition.  The quality of the Ritter printing and originality of the design of the angels and other decorative motifs is quite handsome.

This is an original Pennsylvania Dutch Taufshein or Fraktur.  The name Taufshein is used interchangeably with Fraktur.  This centuries old custom originated in Europe.  The German and Swiss immigrants continued the use of these delightful looking documents to chronicle the history of their families here in America, especially in this part of Pennsylvania.

The earliest were completly hand-drawn and painted and are now worth many thousands of dollars.  Berks County became the heart of Taufshein production in the very begining of the 19th century.  This one was most likely printed by one of the best known of the Berks County Pennsylvania Fraktur printers, John Ritter.  Ritter was located in Reading, PA. Unlike many other Fraktur/Taufshein printers of his day, Ritter's Frakturs were never printed in color, they were always left uncolored for the Fraktur artist to color individually.
